Blackburn’s book introduces the concepts of aerodynamic ventilation, strategic natural light and passive solar heating and cooling into significant horse barn designs ranging from exquisite to functional. These concepts are fundamental to Blackburn’s approach to sheltering horses by creating the healthiest and safest environment possible.
“Most barns are typically static structures requiring artificial wind through the use of fans and artificial lighting often using overburdened electricity,” said Blackburn. “Our equestrian facilities are designed as highly efficient ‘machines.’ Architectural elements naturally foster ventilation and light. The resulting structure becomes an environment that promotes the health and safety of horses through a confluence of science and design.”
Long before sustainability in architecture became fashionable and a daily conversation, Blackburn used natural, local and recycled materials in conjunction with the natural climate to create optimal living environments for equines.
Kevin Plank, the Founder and CEO of Under Armour, contacted Blackburn after he purchased Sagamore Farm, the former home to Alfred G. Vanderbilt and legendary race horses such as Native Dancer, Discovery and Bed O’Roses.
“I was impressed with his passion and reputation for designing horse farms that promote the health and safety of horses, but also meet a level of design standards that convey an appreciation for quality and a reverence for the land,” wrote Plank in the foreword of Healthy Stables by Design.
